The School of Sciences, a college in Southwest Petroleum University (SWPU), was founded in September, 2006 in accordance with the goal of building SWPU into a first class research and teaching university.
At president, the students enrollment reaches 700 of whom 60 are master’s and doctoral degree students. There are 98 members on the faculty of whom 16 are full professors, 21 associate professors; two PhD supervisors,5 PhDs and 48 MAs; three professors granted the Government Special Allowance by the State Council, quite a few teachers and professors awarded different titles (at the national level: one Excellent Teacher, one Excellent Educator, two winners of Fok Ying Tung Teaching Prize; at the provincial or ministerial level: one Expert Educator, one Academic Mainstay Reserve Teacher, one Excellent Manager, three Young/Middle-aged mainstay Teachers and one Youth Teacher Pacemaker; at the university level: two Renowned University Teachers).
The school offers four bachelor’s degree programs: Applied Physics, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Electronic Information Science and Technology, Information and Computational Science; two master’s degree programs: Applied Mathematics and Computing Techniques in Petroleum Engineering, one doctoral program: Computing Techniques in Petroleum Engineering, .
There are seven teaching and research subdivisions: College Mathematics, College Physics, Physical Experiment, Applied Mathematics, Information & Computational Science, Electronic Information Science & Technology, and Applied physics. Four majors---Mathematics & Applied Mathematics, Information & Computational Science, Applied Physics, and Electronic Information Science & Technology are for undergraduates.
This college boasts of advanced scientific research level and strong teaching capability. It has made outstanding achievements in the fields such as cosmic explosion theory, decision making in system optimization and control, analysis and design of algorithms, computation technique in petroleum engineering, wavelet analysis and digital image processing. In recent years many scientific and teaching researches and achievements have been undertaken and have been widely recognized. These researches and achievements are as follows:
150 scientific research projects, with funds amounting to over 10,000,000 RMB. 10 of them have won awards at the national and provincial/ministerial levels and more than 100 academic papers as the outcome of these projects have been embodied in SCI and EI;
20 or so teaching research projects, of which five have won the provincial/ministerial-level teaching achievement awards;
60 prizes gained in China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling;
20 or so monographs and textbooks written by its staff, which have been published;
The honor of “Best Courses in Sichuan Province” for Advanced Mathematics, College Physics and Statistics & Probability.
With the joint efforts of the teaching staff, progress has been made in personnel training, disciplinary construction, development of specialties, scientific researches, academic exchange with the outside and the construction of its CPC branch. As a result, a dynamic and innovative teaching and research force, with young and middle-aged teachers as its mainstay, has been set up.
With the formulation of 11th Five-Year Plan for the School of Sciences in 2006 and the improvement in management conditions, a new height will surely be attained in matters of the quality of personnel training, the level of teaching and researches and disciplinary construction.
