Southwest Petroleum University (SWPU) has offered postgraduate studies since 1978. In 1986 authorization was given to confer the doctorate degree. Presently SWPU has a full academic degree conferring system: two first-class and thirteen second-class disciplines granting a Doctorate degree, seven first-class and 49 second-class disciplines granting a Masters degree, and six disciplines for college teachers to receive a Masters degree. The six master programs cover the major fields in liberal arts, economics, law, the sciences, engineering, management and nineteen first-class disciplines in Applied Economics, Marxist Theoretical Studies, Foreign Languages and Literature, Mathematics, Geology, Mechanical Engineering, Instrument Science and Technology, Materials Science and Engineering, Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics, Control Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Geological Resources and Engineering, Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Management Science and Engineering, and Business Administration.
As of September 2006, 2,703 postgraduate students were enrolled: 459 PhD, 1,684 full-time postgraduate and 560 part-time postgraduate. Since 1978, 2,890 postgraduate students have completed their programs of study and are working as scientists, industrialists, and engineers. Of these 450 completed doctorate studies. There are 30 post-doctorate researchers with almost thirty having completed their research.
SWPU currently has 1,066 teachers. Among these are 161 professors, 45 associate professors, 54 doctoral tutors and 330 master candidate tutors. Members of the staff have distinguished themselves in the following areas:
There are two key disciplines at the national level along with five key disciplines at the provincial and ministerial level. Laboratories are comprised of one with national level and twenty-one with provincial and ministerial level recognition. Among the laboratories are the United Nations sponsored China Petroleum and Gas Oil Field Completion technology Center, the China-Canada Natural Gas Exploration and Development Technology Training Center aided by the government of Canada, and the Ministry of Education’s Natural Gas Exploration and Research Center. The Ministry of Personnel authorized SWPU to establish a post-doctorate program in 1990, of which there are now two available.
In 1999 the Postgraduate School of SWPU was awarded the Advanced Unit of Academic Degree and Graduate Education and Management by the Ministry of Education and the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council. At the same time, the Petroleum and Gas Engineering post-doctor program was awarded the national Excellent Post-Doctor Research Station by the Ministry of Personnel and the National Post-doctor Commission because of its outstanding achievements.
