The School of Material Science and Engineering (SMSE) was founded in May, 2003. Currently there are 42 faculty members in the school, of whom 12 are full professors (including a doctor supervisor), 14 associate professors. There are three post-doctors, 11 doctors and 20 masters on its staff.
Although it is one of the newest schools at Southwest Petroleum University. the school has grown to offer a doctoral degree program in Petroleum and Natural Gas Material and Application. Master’s degree programs are also offered in the following areas: Materials Science, Materials Physics and Chemistry, Materials Machining Engineering, as well as Petroleum & Natural Gas Materials and Application. And bachelor’s degree programs are offered in Materials Science & Engineering, Polymer Materials and Engineering. Materials Science and Engineering covers four areas: Metals, Ceramics, Welding & Detecting Technology and Material Corrosion & Protection. The courses are designed to encourage the student’s innovation and practical ability.
An experiment foundation for the undergraduates has been established by the school and several teaching laboratories are available to the students, which include: metallographic microscopy, materials engineering, materials analysis and corrosion and protection laboratory.
With the joint efforts of the staff and students, the school has achieved high ratio of students’ passing the College English Test---Band 4 (CET4) and National Computer Test (Band Ⅱ). The rate of The first-time employment of graduates in the school always reaches 98%, particularly in the petroleum related industries. This is because the programs offered in the school have earned a good reputation in a number of corporations.
