School of Computer Science (Software School )

History:

The School of Computer Science was founded in 1984.

Academic Programs:

The School of Computer Science offers a doctorate program for petroleum engineering computing technology. The four postgraduate programs are computer application technology; computer software and theory; pattern recognition and intelligent system; and petroleum engineering computing technology. Along with the advanced level degrees, three undergraduate programs are offered: computer science and technology, software engineering and network engineering.

  • Computer Science and Technology: This degree offers specialized training to students in computer technology tailored to address the rapidly advancing technological environment. Training is offered in such subject areas as embedded systems, multimedia technology, and software testing. Graduates with this degree have the functional ability of manipulating and maintaining computers, developing information systems, as well as designing applications and hardware products.
  • Software Engineering: This degree trains international software engineers with the latest IT technology. Graduates āhave a thorough knowledge of computer software theories/methods and can become advanced international technicians of software development/management. Graduates obtain not only the bachelor’s degree, but also the internationally recognized Indian NIIT Certification.
  • Network Engineering: Concentrates on a combination of basic computer science theory and practical network applications. Both programming and management are emphasized with foundational knowledge as well as the application of that knowledge. Students learn the full range of networking: From establishing, administrating and configuring networks to dealing with network flow and troubleshooting. The department has cooperated with the Huawei 3Com Company to establish the Southwest Petroleum 3Com Network College. This college offers students the opportunity to not only learn about, but also master the latest technology of modern computer networks including devices, programming along with the network distribution application programs.

Faculty:

The school is composed of sixty-eight faculty members. There are four professors, fourteen associate professors, and twenty-one instructors with assistants. Nine percent of the staff has earned a doctor’s degree and sixty-seven percent have a master’s degree.

Students:

There are 1,400 undeārgraduate and 120 graduate students studying in the School of Computer Science.

Scientific Research:

Research and academic exchanges are also part of the program. National, provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects have been accomplished in addition to college and bureau level research. Progress has been made in the areas of computer applications, software engineering, computer simulation, and computer intelligence control. A distinguishing characteristic of the academic program is research in a variety of applications such as embedded systems, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, software technology, geographic information systems, computer simulation, network applications, algorithm analysis and design, system optimization and control strategies. One hundred and seventy-three academic papers and eighteen textbooks have been published as a result of the academic endeavors. In the past five years over fifty scientific research projects have been conducted with total expenditures estimated at 15,000,000 RMB. Eleven research studies have received rewards granted by either the ministry or province, and sixteen studies have received recognitions granted by the college or bureau.

Research directions:

  • Database and Management Information Systems: Data models and the geāneral data plan of oil field database systems, data integrity and security mechanisms of oil field database systems, access and control mechanisms of network databases, technology of a data warehouse (including POSC), multi-dimension databases and the organization of oil field geographic information systems.
  • Artificial Intelligence Systems: Multi-knowledge expression treatment systems, fuzzy neural network inference engines, multi-expert system collaboration and conflict resolution, heterogeneous data and data exchanges, agent distribution cooperation.
  • Pattern Recognition: Pattern feature extraction and expression methods, self-adapting parallel computing models and algorithms, neutral network methods and fuzzy neutral cell models, expert system pattern recognition systems.
  • Software Integration and Software Reuse Technology: Software engineering and mining, extracting and standardizing software components for the petroleum industry, component modes for use in the petroleum industry, component-based software architecture, development and standardization of reusable component libraries in petroleum related areas, component expression and searching mechanisms, and component assembly technology.
  • Computer Hardware Technology and Embedded System Development: Simulation of oil prospecting and developing processes, information collection and transmission (as via satellite) and computer control real time data inspection.

SWPU has developed the first Drill Simulator DS-1 in China. This Drill Simulator DS-1 has passed the authentication of the China Petroleum & Gas Company and the Sichuan Science Committee. It has been highly praised as “leading in China for worldwide advancement”. After a continuous effort of more than ten years, new generations of the drill simulator have formed as the technology and methods have evolved. High quality, competitive pricing and an emphasis on superior service have made the drill simulator a well known, industry-wide product resulting in the DS-1 occupying 90% of the national market share in this area.
