School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS)

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) was founded in March, 2001. As a key school of Southwest Petroleum University (SWPU)，the SHSS was established according to the reform of higher education and the requirement of establishing a multi-disciplinary industrial university. It offers three bachelor’s degree programs — Social Work, Public Management and Advertising, with a staff of 56, including nine full professors, 15 associate professors. Currently the school has 362 students, including 19 master’s degree students whose major is Public Management. The SHSS has been granted two M.A. Programs in January, 2006 — the Study of Marxism in China, Ideological and Political Education, which began to recruit students in 2007.

The SHSS is composed of five subdivisions — Marxism-Leninism Department, Moral Department, Social Science Department, the Mandarin Testing Center and the Comprehensive Laboratory. It undertakes the Ideological and Political Theory courses and the optional courses in Humanities. The Ideological and Political Theory has won several provincial and ministerial level prizes. The Theory of Marxism and Ideological and Political Cultivation are best courses at the provincial level.

The school has an advanced teaching and researching faculty staff. In the past few years, the SHSS has finished more than 50 projects successfully, such as the Monitoring Research on the Economic Development of the Provinces in Western China. Among those projects, the Construction and Practical Study on the “Two Courses” and the Study and Instruction on the Behavior of College Students, the History of Deng Xiaoping Theory, the Trend and Our Country’s Countermeasures to Natural Gas Issues at the turn of the 21st Century have been granted with 12 different kinds of awards by provincial governments and the relevant ministries, and more than 30 monographs and course books, as well as more than 500 papers, have been published, such as the Great Creation of Modern Marxism, the Theory and Practice of Ideological Project in Schools, Scientific and Technical Reform and Global Competition in New Century. The SHSS has now formed its own advantages and specialties in the fields of the development of Marxism in China, the Ideological and Political Education, the District Development and Social Work and so on. The SHSS of SWPU will make a new ten-year plan and work hard to promote it to be the first-class school of humanities and social sciences in the province.
